Coffee Table Style Guide

As we continue to self-quarantine, I am eager to bring you guys as much positive blog post content as possible.

It feels like everything has slowed down for everyone and perhaps you have some more time to read up on how you’re going to be styling your home when things go back to normal, *hopefully soon*.

There are 5 main aspects when decorating a coffee table and I’ve also included an popular optional suggestion as well. Click on any of the pictures and it will take you to their online shop!

By following this guide, your coffee table will have a collected and curated feel, finishing your room and making it look both professionally designed and polished.

Incorporate Different Heights

To keep things interesting in a home, designers typically include a variety of heights of furnishings and décor.  For example, in a reading nook, we may have a tall floor lamp beside a shorter side table and perhaps a medium sized plant on the other side.  By doing this, your eye is visually attracted and has more areas to look at, rather than everything being the same height.

When decorating a coffee table, we want to apply this same method with the decor mentioned in this article.  We will incorporate a large vase for height, books for grounding and decorative accessories and greenery for accents and for adding height if need be.

Include Vases

Vases are a great statement piece on their own but they also are ideal for showcasing beautiful fresh garden cuttings or faux stems.  I love to find a tall vase and pair it with a shorter one.

Some of my favourite vases are from McGee & Co, Pottery Barn and LD Shop. Target also has some affordable options and for my Canadian friends, Structube has a great variety with unbeatable prices.

Place or Stack Interesting Books

Coffee table books are not only for the pleasure of reading but they also serve as beautiful decorative pieces that help ground the coffee table.  You can also stack these books if you please as well and that makes for a great effect.  Placing some sort of smaller decorative piece on top of these books also adds another touch of curated décor.

Accessorize with Decorative Accents

Whether you wish to include a decorative piece that makes a strong statement and is larger in size or something that is a bit more subtle, including a decorative accessory is another great way to add dimension to your coffee table.  I will give one suggestion on this, if you are the type to collect lots of things and tend to have more nick knacks than the average person, opt on skipping this suggestion and instead include a bowl or box to organize your belongings!

Decorative pieces include candles, sculptures, boxes, jars and bowls and here are some of my favourites!

Add Some Greenery

You can’t have a surface in the house without a little bit of greenery to tie in the whole look together! Whether placing the greenery in your vase, a small succulent on top of your books, a little bit of green goes a long way!

Optional: Trays

For those that have an ottoman as their coffee table but still want a room to put their drink, placing a tray in the middle of your ottoman is a great option! You get the best of both worlds really! You can also place a tray on a coffee table that is of another material of course and acts as a great way to organize and group the pieces mentioned in this article together.  I tend to gravitate towards using a tray when decorating an all glass coffee table as I don’t like placing décor pieces on the glass itself.

I hope that this guide helps you when you’re decorating your new or existing coffee table!
